Charlie
Vettiner
Park
is a relatively large and open park near
Jeffersontown
. The Park has a very large play structure, tennis courts, a small walking trail,
an RC and Kite flying field, a small pond, a dog run and a great Disc Golf Course. Beyond its playground and disc golf
course, it’s a great place to go if you need some space for your activity.
The play structure is one of the best in
Louisville
and is a favorite of many children.
In addition to the usual fair of slides and ladders it has some interesting features
including a Rock Wall for climbing.
Parents of smaller children must be on guard however as the structure slowly rises
to over ten feet and a toddler could be seriously injured if left unattended.
Another strong point for
Vettiner
Park
is the ample open spaces. There are two large (and empty) fields in the park.
One has been designated as a special purpose field but the other is devoid of classification
and is often used for Golf practice, Frisbee, flag football and even model rocket
launching.

The Disc Golf course is well designed with a great mixture of open
and wooded holes. If you have never
played Disc Golf before, this course would be a great place to start.
The front nine has plenty of wide open holes to help keep you out of trouble. The back nine is tough however and can
be hellish on a chump with poor disc control.
I think this course is friendly in the winter when disc retrieval is easier. In the summer, errant discs require
journeys into thick and unforgiving vegetation that can ruin your fun in a hurry.
The Walking trail offers some exercise stations, but in general it’s
small and inferior to most of the other walking trails in
Louisville
. The small pond is relatively vile
and is not a popular fishing destination.
Also, the park site on a
high
point
and can be quite windy and in hospitable in colder weather.
Overall though, this is one of the better
East End
parks with a lot of potential activities and good facilities.
